Top Tips: Working at home

With working remotely likely to become a reality for many of us as the Coronavirus tightens it’s grip in the coming weeks, we share some of our top tips for working at home.

Top tips for working at home

As a flexible digital agency, Sotic is well set up for remote working and many of our staff take advantage of spending a day or two a week working from home.

It’s not unusual to have staff dialling in to weekly meetings from at least five different locations and with working remotely likely to become a reality for many of us as the Coronavirus tightens it’s grip in the coming weeks, we share some of our top tips for working at home.

  • Get washed and dressed
You’re really not going to be at your best if you are slouching about all day in your PJs, plus, well … eughhhh.
  • Start and finish work at your usual times in order to set a routine to maintain a good work/life balance.
Try really hard to avoid slipping back into work mode later in the evening, the classic ‘I’ll just check a few emails’ line that sees you still at the laptop 2 hours later.
  • Set up a workstation if possible
Perhaps difficult to do if working remotely is only going to be short-term and not everyone has the luxury of a spare room that can be a temporary office but even if you are at the kitchen table, make sure it’s clear of the detritus of home life while you’re ‘at work’
  • Leave the house
This doesn’t mean doing lunch every day but get outside and get some fresh air, have a walk, grab a coffee or go to the shop/post office/bank. Your body needs to move and the fresh air will do you good.
  • Take advantage of the perks
Want to get the spag bol made for dinner, go for a run or get a load of laundry on? Or perhaps you’re waiting for the Gas engineer to come and repair the boiler? This is really easy to manage while working from home. I’m not suggesting you undertake a full spring clean of the house on company time but with no commute, it’s easy to fit in small chores or activities and keep on top of home life.
  • Use a messaging tool to keep in touch with colleagues
At Sotic we use Slack for voice and video calls as well as instant messaging. It’s friendly, personal and a great way to work efficiently. Plus we have channels for interests (hiking and Love Island to name two) as well as projects.

Working at home isn’t for everyone but by following our tips you can make the best of it.
