Irish Rugby Kick Off 2019 Six Nations with Launch of a New Digital Platform

With Ireland ready to open defence of their Guinness Six Nations title against England, fans and followers of Irish Rugby may have noticed that their website has a new look.
We have been working with the IRFU since 2008 and last September announced an extension to the partnership. As part of the renewed partnership, Sotic have been responsible for both the design and development of the new website.

The new Irish Rugby website has been built from the ground up on Sotic’s supercharged WordPress Sports Theme, involving the transfer of almost 30,000 news articles, match previews and reports from the previous system.

The new website is also user-centric and has been designed to reflect Irish Rugby’s dual remit as an elite sporting organisation competing at the very highest levels of the game and as a guardian of the sport of rugby union in Ireland.

The site has been designed and built mobile first with a fast, feature-rich and intuitive experience for users, whether they are regular or first-time visitors.

The customisable homepage gives the IRFU the ability to add or remove elements with ease and to switch effortlessly between promoting match coverage, a participation initiative or even a competition or commercial sponsorship.

The matchcentre, which is a key destination for fans, integrates technology for LiveBlogging and uses Sotic’s Digital Asset Management software to power live match photo galleries as well as integrating with Opta Sports for live statistics.

Commenting on the launch of the new website Barry Cunningham, Digital Marketing Manager at the Irish Rugby Football Union said;
“We are delighted with the new website. We have built it with the future in mind and the Sotic powered platform offers us huge flexibility to showcase all aspects of the game and the work done by the IRFU.The Guinness Six Nations will obviously be centre stage over the next few weeks and users will see some fantastic new features but the new site will also help us to amplify the visibility of the domestic game through increased coverage of everything from the All-Ireland League to our Girls’ Give It A Try programmes.
We have worked with Sotic for over ten years and they continue to lead the way in this field which has helped make Irish Rugby the biggest digital sport in Ireland.”

Behind-the-scenes the site is hosted on a secure and robust platform through Sotic’s partnership with Amazon Web Solutions (AWS) ensuring that it can easily handle traffic peaks during key match periods and Sotic will continue to provide a high level of support to the IRFU.

Jonathan McConnell, Sotic’s Head of Digital Operations said;
“It is great that we have been able to provide Irish Rugby with a fresh, exciting, and innovative digital presence at such an important time for the National teams with the Six Nations tournaments upon us and the Rugby World Cup on the horizon.
However there is so much more to Irish Rugby and the new site allows their digital team to quickly focus on whatever is currently at the forefront of the game, whether it be the club game, women’s rugby or minis events”
