New website launched for Aberdeen Football Club

Sotic has unveiled a brand new website for Scottish Premiership side, Aberdeen FC

We have been partnering The Dons on digital since 2014 and the new site, which is our second for the club, was a ground-up redesign and build on Sotic’s super-charged version of the WordPress CMS.

With over 50% of traffic to the AFC website coming via mobile device we designed mobile-first, and the responsive design produces a fast site with a sleek and modern look and feel and an easy user journey.

The site was six months in the making, from the early research phase to launch, and cements AFC’s position at the top of the league in terms of digital offering.

Here’s a few of the highlights.

Design

The design is clean and simple, visually appealing and polished while remaining true to AFC’s brand identity. We used an agile methodology for the wireframes so that the user experience on different screen sizes is optimised and both text and visual content have been carefully balanced to improve user experience and readability.

Speed

Responsive images on the site mean more efficient loading, optimised to screen width and device. We load only the necessary technical resources required to render a particular page using conditional front-end asset loading (CSS & Javascript files) as well as lazy loading for a variety of features that are below the fold.

Matchcentre & Statistics

The matchcentre for each game is a vital hub for supporters with the match overview, preview, report, related news and media, team formation and statistics all just a click away. We have fully integrated the feeds from statistics provider Opta and used their stats widgets to produce dynamic live scoring pages that have been laid out with the user in mind

Player Profile Pages

Our developers have truly flexed their muscles in this area to combine the power of WordPress custom posts with Sotic’s software to power the content with a cutting-edge design.

The Aberdeen 1st Team players each have their own instance in WordPress and all the statistical updates, everything from appearances and goals to shots on target and number of times fouled, are pulled through automatically from the Sotic system using the WordPress Rest API.

Monetisation

We understand implicitly that a club website must play it’s part in generating income, be it through sales of tickets, season tickets, memberships, premium TV service, merchandise or advertising.
The new design allows adequate advertising space for the club to monetise or to use for in-house promotions and we have built in great customisation features to allow for promotion of the merchandise store on the home page along with custom messaging.
